Australian cricket star Adam Gilchrist is playing the stock market in a bid to raise awareness of the disease that has seriously afflicted his dad, Stan.

For the second year running, the powerful batsman and wicketkeeper has teamed up with website yahoo7 for the Adam Gilchrist Challenge to raise money for arthritis research. "It's what I call a trading challenge," he says.

People register online at Yahoo7 for $49.95 and are given an imaginary pot of $50,000 to invest in the stock market.

The person who increases the pot the most over 10 weeks wins a real $50,000.

"There are weekly prizes and a prize for the person who most closely matches my investment performance - poor sod," Gilchrist says.

"Regardless of who wins, all participants in the Trading Challenge learn a lot about stock market investment and gain valuable knowledge."

According to Arthritis Australia, one in six Australians has the disease.
